This episode deals with some of the latest advances in brain science. The guest is Michael Merzenich, Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience at the University of California at San Francisco. Professor Merzenich has been a pioneer in brain science for about 50 years, and is a leading figure in the relatively new field of brain plasticity, which holds that mental habits are not fixed, but can be modified using the right methods.
Dr. Merzenich is also the founder and chief scientific officer of Posit Science, a company that uses brain plasticity to develop new behavioral therapies, and he’s the winner of numerous awards, including the prestigious 2016 Kavli Prize, an international award that recognizes major achievements in the fields of astrophysics, nanotechnology and neuroscience. He’s also the author of the recent book “Soft-Wired: How the New Science of Brain Plasticity Can Change Your Life,” and he holds about 100 patents in his field. On Future Talk, he discusses the goals of brain science, the challenges that have to be overcome, and the approaches that seem most promising of success. Martin Wasserman hosts.
